Geauga Youth Advisory Council

Our Mission

Youth empowering youth throughout Geauga County to create a healthy lifestyle for themselves and future generations through demonstration of leadership skills and prevention programs.

What is YLP and YAC?

Youth Led Prevention (YLP)

Youth Led Prevention is an evidence based leadership program for middle and high school students that provides students the opportunity to affect issues they see as important in their schools and communities. The YLP mission is to encourage and train youth to become active citizens, agents for community change, and act as role models and advocates for healthy lifestyles among themselves and peers.

The overarching goal of youth led programming in Ohio is that young people will collectively engage in a planning process to create and implement a strategic plan that uses evidence based strategies to create community level change. Young people become empowered by engaging with others in the process.

YLP provides youth leadership training, school advisor support, and two annual county-wide activities; Camp Burton middle school leadership camp, and Youth Summit high school symposium. YLP also sponsors YAC (Youth Advisory Council) made up of representatives from multiple school districts that guide the year’s focus, organize and lead the annual activities, and help design local prevention initiatives such as the YAC Peer Mentoring Program and a mental health awareness campaign.

Geauga Youth Advisory Council (YAC)

The Geauga Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is an integral part of the YLP mission. YAC operates as the central body for county leadership, training and strategic planning for youth–led projects. YAC is youth led and adult guided, meaning the young people work through a strategic planning process, guided by the adult allie, in order to assess an area of concern, the capacity to make the concern change, develop a plan on how to approach the area of concern, implement the plan to make a change and finally assess the process in its entirety.

Our goal is to empower you, as young people to create positive changes in your lives, the lives of those around you, and in your schools and community.
